Spring 2008 Soccer season Newsletter

We will be restarting our monthly board meeting later this month, all of which will be open to the public. We currently have a President (Chris Prince), Vice President (Philip Jahn), Treasurer (Rhonda Prim) and 3 members at large. We are in need of a Secretary and a Concessions Director. The Secretary will be a voting member of the board, while the Concessions Director will be a non-voting member.

Secretary (voting board member)

We need a Secretary for the Laketon Youth Activities Council board. The duties of the Secretary are:

  • To document the minutes for the monthly board meetings
  • Send meeting minute to board members and to Webmaster.

Concession Stand Director (non-voting board member)

We need a Concession Stand Director for the Laketon soccer program. The duties of the Concession Stand Director are:
  • Purchase and maintain concession stand goods, (food, drinks, and paper products)
  • Recruit and schedule volunteers for working in concession stand on game days.
  • Maintain concession stand cleanliness.

U6 Coaches

We are in desperate need of U6 coaches. The last couple of seasons, we have had a hard time getting volunteers for coaching our U6 teams. Because of this, our U6 teams have been very large. We would like to have our teams to be around 6-7 players per team, but we have been seeing teams with 9-11 players. This results in less playing time and less touches of the soccer ball for all players. The idea is for each player to play at least 50% of the game, and to have the maximum number of touches per game. Coaching the U6 teams is fun and can be rewarding. You do not need to be a soccer expert to coach these younger players. Winning is not important at this age, having fun is.

ALL Coaches Note: All Laketon Soccer coaches and assistant coaches will need a Risk Management Certification to coach with Laketon. This certification can be filled out at http://www.msysa.net/programs/riskmanage.html. The certification verifies that the card holder has not committed a specific crime in the past, and deemed our children would be safe around that person. A list of the crimes that the approval committee deems a disqualifying offence can be found at http://www.msysa.net/programs/MSYSA%20RM%20Policy_10-25-06.pdf. The $10.00 cost will be reimbursed when a copy of the approved certification is given to the club. If you DO NOT have a Risk Management Number, you will NOT coach.

We are working on a "Laketon Coaches Best of Practices Book" to post on our website for everyone to download. It will be in a PDF format, and will be broken down into age specific practices as well as general practices. We need your help putting this book together. If you can email me your favorite practices and skill lessons, links to your favorite coaching web sites, list of what books and videos that you would recommend, and any other coaching tips. We are interested in all aspects of the game, as well as conditioning, nutrition, player heath and first aid tips. This book will be designed to help the new coach just getting into soccer to the seasoned veteran looking for new tips or a refresher on some forgotten basic skills.

For those that are interested in becoming a referee, there will be an entry-level referee class at Mona Shores High School on February 9th, from 9am to 5:30 pm. The cost for the class is $50.00, but there may be an added cost at the Mona Shores facility for lunch. Please see http://www.msysareferee.net/EntryLevel.htm for more details. If you cannot make the 2/9/2008 class, Fremont will be hosting the class as well on March 8th. Note: You will need to have a current copy of your Risk Management Certification to attend this class. The referees that Laketon Soccer uses are certified referees for all age groups.
